Ali Flaum joined the Center in 2005 from the Washington, D.C., Public Defender Service, where she was a trial attorney for over five years and represented hundreds of clients in cases ranging from misdemeanors to murders. Also while at the Public Defender Service, Ali served on the D.C. Sentencing Commission and litigated civil rights and post-conviction cases as part of a special legal unit dedicated to systemic criminal justice reform. In this unit, and via her work as a trial lawyer, Ali also developed expertise in forensic DNA, prosecutorial misconduct, false confessions and the fallibility of eyewitness identification testimony.

Before joining the D.C. Public Defender Service, Ali was a clinical fellow at the Georgetown University Law Center, where, as recipient of an E. Barrett Prettyman fellowship, she taught and supervised students in Georgetown's Criminal Justice and Juvenile Justice clinics, tried cases in the D.C. Superior Court, and earned an LL.M. in clinical advocacy. Before that, Ali was a Skadden Fellow at the Urban Justice Center, a civil legal services office serving homeless adults in New York.
