Appellate Advocacy Program
This program presently offers students the opportunity to participate in appellate advocacy before the Seventh Circuit and the United States Supreme Court in two separate clinical courses.
In the Federal Appellate Clinic, students under the supervision of Sarah Schrup represent criminal defendants on appeal in the Seventh Circuit. The students are responsible for all aspects of the appeal, including brief preparation and participation in oral argument. The seminar component of the clinic, which is highly collaborative, focuses on developing students’ persuasive writing and research skills in the context of their Seventh Circuit cases.
The Supreme Court Clinic was designed in conjunction with Sidley Austin’s Supreme Court practice group. Students in the clinic work with Carter Phillips, Northwestern alum and distinguished Supreme Court litigator, and his Sidley partner Jeff Green to assist in the preparation of petitions for certiorari, merits briefs and moot courts for lawyers arguing before the Court. The clinic sponsors several notable guest speakers and offers the students the opportunity to attend oral arguments in Washington, D.C.
The program is led by Sarah Schrup. For further information, please contact her at (312) 503-0063.
