Borrow Procedures

Getting Proxy Borrowing Privileges

When using library books for source and cite it's essential to charge them to your journal's library account rather than your individual account. Before a round of source and cite a journal editor emails a list of articles, authors, and the journal members working on each article to the Access Services Librarian. The library system must be updated with this information before items can be charged out for journal source and cite.

Journal proxy borrowers have greater access to materials than individuals and do not accrue late fines for Law library books. Please be aware that individuals are responsible for any late fines and fees if materials for source and cite are charged to individual accounts.

Using the Journal Shelves

The library provides shelf space for journal source and cite materials on the fourth floor of Rubloff. Library books charged to journals must be kept on these shelves when not in use. Library staff regularly checks these shelves to make sure that all books have been charged. Any books that are charged to individuals or not charged will be automatically pulled.

Journals have a loan period of three months. Library staff will monitor all alerts and automatically renew items up to two times. If a book has been recalled or has been renewed two times staff will notify a designated editor and pull the item from the shelf.

Although the library does not charge journals late fines on Law library books, journals are still subject to fees for lost books from all Northwestern libraries.

After a source and cite project is done the journal is responsible for returning items to the circulation desk.

Requesting via Interlibrary Loan

When making an interlibrary loan request for journal source and cite you must sign in as a member of the journal. Editors are responsible for supplying a list of articles, authors, and journal members so that requests can be made for the journal.

Always review requests made by other journal staff before placing your request to avoid duplication.

Please verify the citation before placing a request. Incomplete or erroneous citations cannot be filled.

Accessing Electronic Documents from ILL

Individuals are sent electronic documents via e-mail. Documents received this way may only be accessed by the requesting individual for two weeks after notification before they are deleted. Please download, e-mail, or print copies of electronic documents. The library cannot guarantee that duplicate requests will be filled.
